from wells in the midst of Jutland it flows through a very

varied landscape to end its journey in Randers fjord.

Formerly the river was know for its salmon all over Europe

but the building of a powerplant by Tange put and end to

that and the last Guden salmon was caught in 1928. The

salmon was reintroduced about 15 years ago and today

river Guden has produced catches that far exceeds those

of any other river in Denmark and hold good potentials

for becoming one of the top salmon rivers in Europe.

Salmon fishing nowadays takes place from Tange and

onwards to the fjord.  Some harling (boat fishing) is done

at the lower parts of the river otherwise it is purely bank

fishing. At the upper parts fly fishing is becoming a widely

used method but also spin fishing and other baits are

popular. Some wading is taking place at the upper beats.

At the upper parts of the river around Tange and Bjerringbro

as well as the town of Langaa flyfishing is rapidly gaining in

popularity but the major part of all fishing is performed either

with a spinner or a spin-fly. The latter can at times be e very

effective way of reaching the salmon when waterlevels are

high. Since the width of the river Guden varies between 8-40

meters spin fishing is sometimes preferable for reaching the

salmon (often ABU Reflex, Myr and Mepps are used).

The flies used are traditional wet flies/tube flies of various

sizes. Patterns like Red Tag and its variants, Sunray Shadow,

T&L and Chillimps are all examples of proven flies that should

be a part of the flybox when fishing in this river.

The salmon runs have in some years been very impressive

but the river also holds a good stock of seatrouts. Catches

peaks in september and october and only a small minority of

fishermen tries their luck during springtime but chances for

huge salmon are present - electrofishing has revealed fish

weighing above 22 kg !

Flyfishing in the river Guden is often done wading utilizing

the switch or spey cast as a means of combating the

high banks and bushes surrounding parts of the river. It

is, however, not necessary in other parts where a normal

overhead cast will do the job. As a general rule sundown

and sunrise provides for the best flyfishing. Spin fishing

can be undertaken with good results throughout the day.

To achieve the best results it is important that the bait is

fished as deep as possible and often it is necessary to

fish upstream to get the bait down when spin fishing.

Circumstances - the weather, water level, light, time of
day, temperature etc. will all influence on the tactics
used - and luck will play a part as well !

Flies used at river Guden ranges from traditional wet flies

like Silver Doctor, Red Butt and Thunder and Lightning to

palmer flies such Red Tag Palmer as well as tube flies.

There is ample room for experimenting and if the fish are

in the mood they will take most of what is served.  Spinners

used along the river Guden is Myr spinners and probably

the most popular - Mepps - in various sizes and colors.

The good old Reflex spinner from ABU/Garcia is also one

that dserves some attention especially for autumn fishing.

Spin-fly is a method used by several along the river and it

is an effective way to reach the salmon when water level

is high and the fish are less willing to take. Natural baits

such as worms and shrimps are also used by many local

  fishermen with good results...

The majority of fishing takes place around the towns of Langaa

and Bjerringbro. Here you will find excellent beats that will hold

salmon and/or seatrouts throughout the season. The stream

is gently flowing with no major currents or rapids which some

times can make it a little bit difficult to locate hot spots holding

salmon. Beats like Krumkagen, Bamsebo, Skibelund and

Sandskredet are all good streches for spinfishing as well as

flyfishing although the latter beat can be somewhat difficult to

fish effectively with a fly. Around the bridges by Langaa the

Lilleaa contributary runs into the river Guden and where the

salmon/seatrout rests before entering Lilleaa or continuing

upstream. Most salmons are caught downstream Bjerringsbro

while most seatrouts are caught upstream oddly enough.

Fishing courses offered by REDTAG along the river Guden
takes place on some of the top beats depending on where
the salmon and seatrouts are located. Other factors to
consider is the water levels that to a certain extent is
controlled by the power plant, rainfalls, temperature and
river vegetation. This way we try to optimize your chances
of getting in touch in touch with some of these magnificient
fish and enjoy the pleasures of  fishing in waters that with
every cast of the fly or spinner holds the possibility of
getting in touch with giant salmons above 10 kg.
