Seatrout fishing in river Karup

River Karup is probably the most well known Danish river

throughout the world due to its giant seatrouts. Each year

seatrouts well above 10 kg are caught in this river making it

one of the absolute hot spots for seatrout fishing.

The river holds seatrouts over a stretch of more than 50 km

and fishing is excellent from the estuary in Skive fjord to the

beats found upstreams the town of Karup. The river flows

through a tunnel valley made when the ice withdrew some

8.000 years ago and generally some of the most beautiful

parts in Denmark can be found along this river. The stream

has in some parts a swift current running rapidly towards

Skive while the lower river stretches is marked by a more

slowly running stream. Water dept is between 1-3 meters.

The tributaries also offers fine fishing i.e. river Haderup.

The season commenses around June 1st and lasts until

the end of October. Normally the seatrout rapidly passes

through the lower stretches and can within a couple of days

be found a long way up the river. It takes willingly the first few

days but then becomes harder to engage....

Flyfishing is the preferred method along the river and many

considers night time fishing the ultimate for seatrout.

Fishing seatrouts can sometimes be very easy and at

times a daunting and challenging task. It all depends...

Early in the season the seatrout will often take willingly

to a fly being a matter of hitting it at the right spot but

later on it seems to have learned the lesson and stays

inactive for longer periods. Tube flies of all sorts are

the most common type used by the Karup fishermen.

Local patterns as "Ni'eren" & "Den tropiske gråspurv"

are good patterns and tubes with black wings and

red butts are highly effective. The good old Red Tag

variants also takes their part of the fish. Spinning can

be a good alternative at times

Several Angling clubs holds the fishing rights up along the

river and along most of the stretches the seatrouts will stop.

Beats like Dueholm, Gronbaeks, Jernbanebroen, Spangen,

Aalykke, Gallehoj etc. are all beats that are available to the

public however. All in all there are excellent opportinities for

fishing seatrout for the foreign Angler.

A host of other good beats are to be found. River bends,

trees and large stones all create fine hiding places for the

seatrout.  Water weeds will also be of particular interest

to the Angler since the fish often uses this for the same

purpose. "Fishing the weeds" is creating real challenges!

Seatrouts can be found in most parts of the river from
the lower stretches around Skive to upstream Karup.
In the lower parts the river is fairly wide while at the
beats upstream Karup it narrows considerably which
also effects the way to fish.

The behavior of the seatrouts is also of importance for
knowing which beats are most likely to hold the fish.
This depends among other things at what time of year
and what time of day you fish, the number of fish
entering the river, the growth of water weeds, weather
conditions etc.  Sometimes a run of seatrouts can be
found way up the river shortly after entering without

     stopping at the lower parts.

Many fishermen will claim that night fishing is the ultimate

time for challenging the seatrout - evenings and mornings

presents equally good opportunities. Dark tubeflies are

the right pick at these times. Rain and slight rippling of the

river increases chances during daytime. Near the end of

season the seatrout seems to be active all day and easier

to lure partly also because the vegetation by now is gone

giving the seatrout an opportunity to actually see the fly.  A

change of fly for an unwilling seatrout can be a good idea

especially during the last couple of months of the season.

Sometimes a change of tactics is the only way to engage

the seatrout. Increasing speed when the fly is on its way

across the stream is one way to try to catch the interest

of the fish.....

Fishing courses offered by REDTAG along the river Karup
takes place on some of the top beats depending on where
the seatrouts are located. Other factors that needs to be
considered is the water levels that to a certain extent is
controlled by, rainfalls, temperature and not least the
river vegetation. This way we try to optimize your chances
of getting in touch with some of these magnificient fish
and enjoy the pleasures of  fishing in waters that with
every cast of the fly or spinner holds the possibility of
getting in touch with giant seatrouts above 10 kg.
